American Nomads Project
The American Nomads Project applied an American pioneering ethos to the anticipated migratory lifestyle made necessary by global climate changes. Though not a literal re-enactment of historic pioneering events, the American Nomads Project’s originating inspiration drew from the diary entries of novice prospectors in the 1949 California Gold Rush and of stories told by New World Pilgrims fresh off the boat after crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
The project began in 2010 on residency at the Vermont Studio Center.
In this project, we assumed the following:
1. Global climates change.
Rather than hand over our adaptive capabilities to the likes of government agencies and computer engineers, the BS Collective assumes common individuals can form objects of use for surviving (no, for thriving) in the new environment.
2. Humans migrate.
This is part of our evolutionary design. Similarly, culture migrates with the people. It adapts rituals and social norms to fit new circumstances.
3. (Therefore) the human body is designed for movement.
With the exception of couches and home mortgages, everything yearns for us to move.
4. The World to Come deserves levity.
With change comes the awkward as it moves towards grace. We are inventors. More accurately, we are scavengers. Scavengers of objects and of ideas. We put these ideas to new purpose.
